Bike it
There is good news for some of Kent’s younger two-wheeled enthusiasts this spring with the announcement that the county council has appointed a Bike It officer.
Bike It is national charity Sustrans’ response to the fact that while millions of children tell researchers that they would like to cycle to school, only one per cent of them actually do so.
The ground-breaking Bike It project that has now reached Kent has already quadrupled the number of children cycling to the schools it has been working with.
Kent’s recently-appointed Bike It officer will be promoting cycling at schools in the Ashford area, mainly targeting nine to 13-year-olds.
The officer will work with the county’s school travel plan advisers to increase the number of youngsters cycling to school. They will also encourage partners to provide secure cycle storage, on-road cycle training (up to Level 2 of the new national standard) and information, as well as working on cycle to school week and other events.
Bike It is a Sustrans project funded by the bicycle industry and backed by Cycling England with the support of the Department for Transport.
